Introducing the Nike Air Max
The first Air Max was released in 1987 and designed by Tinker Hatfield. Hatfield struck inspiration when saw the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris. The French art exhibition’s design is bold, with an exposed external structure the gives visitors a glimpse into the architecture’s inner workings. Hatfield decided to create a shoe with a similar design treatment, thus creating the Air Max’s iconic ‘window to the sole’.
The Air Max ‘window’ exposed the Air Technology unit that gives the Nike Air range its all-day comfort and allows for low impact steps. This silhouette is now available in a variety of iterations, including the Air Max ’90, Air Max 270, plus the Air Max Plus (a silhouette exclusive to Foot Locker in Australia).
